Farai Mukura - Disability Technical Advisor

In an effort to strengthen its human resource base, DHAT has hired Farai Mukuta a 52 year old disability expert. Farai has spent a greater part of his life networking and working with the people from various backgrounds, initially spearheading youth activities under the Zimbabwe Young Christian Students (YCS) as the National Team Secretary for 5 years, then trained as a teacher and taught for 10 years, 6 of them as the deputy head of Gokomere CPS in Masvingo province.He is a final year student of an Executive Master of Peace, Leadership and Governance degree with Africa University; holds a Masters in Business Administration (MBA), a Bachelor of Science Honours degree in Sociology (BSc Hons.), and a Certificate in Education. He has vast experience in lobbying and advocacy work spanning from early 1980s as the National Team Secretary of the Young Christian Students (YCS) under the “Option for the Poor” philosophy where he mobilised youth throughout the country to strive for the betterment of lives of the poor in rural areas and harmonised those newly resettled people soon after independence through work camps for the in school and out of school youths he closely collaborated with the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) in enumerating victims of the atrocities the country went through during the early stages of independence, working together with other religious orders. Farai has networked with disability umbrella bodies in Europe, America, Africa and Asia, visiting most of their programmes for comparative purposes and has also carried out extensive research on disability and contributed to disability policy development in Zimbabwe.

As the Executive Director of the National Association of Societies for Care of the Handicapped (NASCOH) he has superintended over the growth of the organisation from a membership of 21 organisations in 1997 to the current 70 organisations of and for the care of the handicapped. Farai has chaired Chivi South Development Trust, Gokomere Primary School SDA, and MS Zimbabwe (Danish International Cooperation for Development) Policy Advisory Board (PAB) among other voluntary groups. He is the past secretary of the National Association of non-Governmental organisations in Zimbabwe (NANGO) and sat on other boards like Action and the Zimbabwe Tourism Advisory Board while he remains a board member of the Zimbabwe Election Support Network(ZESN) and the International Foundation of Electoral Systems (IFES).
